I logged onto gmail yesterday to see an ad on the login page. It claimed that you can now connect with cell phones via gmail. Interesting. More or less, you can now skype with google voice. And what does that mean? Free calling is what that means. Real cool development for google/gmail users. I also thought the art direction of this spot was pretty interesting, as well, so thought I’d post it along with this blurb about my excitement for this new technological advance. Can’t you tell I’m a gmail user?

I know I just posted one of these type of spots below, where a goldfish was used, which I thought was an original take on this type of ad. I think these Goldberg-style spots are pretty common nowadays, so a twist is pretty important or it’s just another one in the pack. I thought this was kinda funny, because you expect the contraption to finish up at the end and do the grand finale (in this case, drop a pretty girl into a tank of water). But at the last second the dog grabs the yummy Cadbury treat and ruins the whole drawn out gag. That is a twist, my friends, and that little bit of unexpected is what makes it interesting.

In the world of ‘Can you hear me now?”, it’s pretty refreshing to see a phone ad that isn’t based on coverage maps or slandering your competition. TBWA\CHIAT\DAY New York simply took the notion of the Vonage call clarity being great, and did it in an interesting way. These bad boys apparently won a gold at Cannes this year, which speaks for itself. There’s a whole campaign of them, but I liked this one best.

Check out these old PC ads. They are wild- and it really reminds us how far we’ve come. The advent of high powered and affordable (relatively) machines has revolutionized what we do in the advertising/design/creative world. What used to take weeks now takes seconds and multiple positions in a shop have now become one person’s responsibility, all thanks to the digi box you’re currently staring at.
Oh, and sweet sideburns, guy.

Ok, shooting people into the air is pretty radical. These blog things are great for that. Usually a heavy(ish) person jumps onto the blob, sends someone sailing into the water. This vid two large guys jump onto the blob and the smaller person on the blob goes for a major ride.

Found some macro shots of eyes on the interwebs today. They are really stunning, done by Suren Manvelyan.

I can’t tell if I like this because it’s got neat effects of what. Really the premise is pretty simple, the concept not earth shattering, but it’s still quite entertaining. And in that vein, the other ad in this campaign I saw is even more amusing. I mean, we’ve all seen these Rube Goldberg spots and videos (a la OK GO’s last video), but I’ve yet to see a goldfish attempt such a trick:
I better start chugging some Drench, as I have some work to do. Oh wait, they sell Drench in England. Speaking of which, Clemmow, Hornby, Inge & Partners are responsible for these little guys.
Ps- Wonder if any goldfish were harmed in the making of this?

No, really. Who is your daddy? Maury Povich answers this question for inquiring babies everyday on his show. You know the drill: woman comes out on stage crying about how she doesn’t know which of these 20 men impregnated her, then one of the suspects makes the defense that it wasn’t him. Finally, after a lot of booing and silly interviews comes the best part—the DNA test results.
The show is often really comedic, but unfortunately for those of us with full-time jobs, we rarely get to enjoy the drama- filled hour of Maury. That’s where this blog, The Results Are In!, comes in, with animated gifs to reduce the show down to its most hilarious moments.

We finished up a new campaign for GoLite and got to see it at OR in all its life-sized glory. The series highlights GoLite’s Spring/Summer ‘11 trail running, hiking and travel apparel.
Since its beginning, GoLite has been all about lightweight gear made for the trail. Whether it’s an after-work out-the-backdoor loop, backpacking the Colorado Trail or connecting the dots on an overseas adventure – the more time we spend on the trail, the better we feel.
The insight for this campaign is about choices. The choices we make determines how much time we have for the trail. Do I choose to watch some reality TV or do I get off my ass and go for a run? Do I pack the blow-dryer, the curling iron, the straightener AND the krimper?
The images were shot by the uber-talented Jamie Kripke of Boulder. He uses cameras.

We all sit behind silver Macs. It’s what we creative types do. The designers at Herraiz Soto & Co thought that if we’re supposedly expressing ourselves while working on our Macs all day, why not express ourselves directly ON our Macs? So, became StickWithMeBaby. So, go buy yourself some stickers and let your Mac sport it’s lovely handlebar mustache.

Showing popularity at Cannes, this ad has become a YouTube favorite, garnering over 2.5 million views. It was done by Y&R Thailand Bangkok, and is for slimming green tea. Thought it was a funny way to start off FRIDAY.
